These winners won a trip to Raleigh to meet with the Gaston County Legislative Delegation and the Lt. Governor, Beverly Perdue. This was hosted by Senator David Hoyle. The Gaston County Education Foundation sponsors the “Proudest Kid in Gaston County” this contest.

    I’m Proud to Live in Gaston County by Catherine Bynum

    I am proud to live in Gaston County because of all the wonderful things to see and do. Daniel Stow Botanical Gardens is in Gaston County. I really like it because it is so beautiful. All the flowers and fountains make it beautiful. My class went there at the beginning of September and I really enjoyed it.

    Another place I enjoy visiting is Martha Rivers Park. Before I started school I stayed with my Maw-Maw and Paw-Paw while my Mom and Dad worked. Maw-Maw sometimes took me there in the morning. I really liked the sandbox because Maw-Maw always had to empty my shoes. They were always full of sand when I was through playing.

    I also enjoy the new Greenway. I like to walk there because of all the nature. I like hearing the birds sing and seeing all of the different sizes and shapes of the trees.

    Crowder's Mountain State Park also has all of these things and a little more. You can climb the mountain and see all the way to Charlotte if the sky is clear.

    Another favorite place of mine is the Schiele Museum. There are lots of things to do there. You can see sheep, pigs, and roosters. I have gotten two rooster feathers there. There are lots of stuffed animals, a planetarium, nature walks to take, and a cool museum store. I really love that place!

    As you can see, Gaston County is a great place to grow up. I think I’ll stay here forever.

    Gaston County and Me by Hannah Newcombe

    I am proud to live in Gaston County. I am Hannah Newcombe, and I am in the third grade. I am eight years old I live in Gastonia, N.C., and I go to school at Gaston Day School. I have lived in Gaston County for eight years. I am proud to live in Gaston County because of the great education, health and fitness, and the helpers in the community.

    I am proud to live in Gaston County because of its good education. The Schiele Museum gives wonderful programs, such as programs about space, animals, and Native Americans. The programs can help children, even adults, learn more about that particular thing. The libraries in Gaston County have books that can help you learn. Some libraries such as Gaston County Public Library have programs for litter children. C. Grier Bean Trucking Museum can help people learn about trucks, and not many people can go because it is one out of three truck museums in the U.S.A. Belmont Abbey College is a church and a college. The college helps young adults learn how to do the job they want to do.

    I am proud to live in Gaston County because of the good health and fitness programs. The hospitals in Gaston County help sick and seriously injured people. Hospitals can save lives and bring lives to this world. Doctors are the people who work in the hospitals. Nurses help doctors with their work. The Y.M.C.A. has a swimming pool, a basketball court, a soccer field, and a place to exercise. The Y.M.C.A is a great place to do lots of things. They let many teams use their pool, soccer field, and basketball court.

    I am proud to live in Gaston County because of its good helpers. Policemen give speeders tickets and arrest bad people. They will help you find your parents if you are lost in somewhere big. Firemen help hurt people and put out fires. They will help you get out of a burning building. Jenny Stultz helps Gaston County by helping businesses get started. She helps Gaston County stay safe. Sheriffs are like policemen. They can arrest criminals and help you find your parents if you are lost. They will also give speeders tickets so the roads stay safe.

    Education, health and fitness, and the helpers in our community are good reasons to live in Gaston County. I have lived in Gaston County for all my life. I think it is a great place to raise a family.

Frequently Asked Questions

- What type of organization is Gaston Together?

Gaston Together is an organization committed to building a better Gaston County through planning and problem solving. Our organization takes the quality principles that have been so successful in business and applies that type of structured process to community problems.
- How do you do that?
    Gaston Together has three central activities:

  1. To help other organizations and groups address community problems by providing trained facilitators and by providing training in the Gaston Together problem-solving process;

  2. To establish action teams (or task forces) to examine specific issues using the Gaston Together process. These action teams would bring individuals and organizations already working on the issue together with other citizens to work towards identifying the root cause of the problem and determining appropriate action;

  3. To institute and carryout programs, initiatives, and activities in an effort to lead change and for the betterment of Gaston County.
- What exactly is the Gaston Together process?
The Gaston Together Process is based on the quality principles used by many businesses. It is the Continuous Process Improvement model that has four phases: Plan-Do-Check-Act. Its goal is to identify root causes of problems rather than symptoms and to lead a group toward developing solution that addresses those root causes.
- What specific things is Gaston Together doing now?
    Gaston Together is involved in several things at the moment including:

  • Providing facilitators for the United Way’s task forces on transportation and literacy;

  • Assisting the area’s ministers to organize a one-day conference for themselves to examine their role in improving the Gaston Community;

  • Developing a web-site that will bring together as many Gaston County organizations as possible as a resource to the County’s citizens;

  • Organizing task forces to examine parental involvement in education and juvenile crime (other task forces will be added during 1999).
- How is Gaston Together doing all of this?
The work begins with a group of committed and specially trained volunteers called the Gaston Together Leadership Team. These volunteers have had extensive training in facilitating groups of citizens to identify the root causes of community problems. Some members of the Leadership Teams are available to facilitate the process for other groups, some members help organize action teams and others provide training in Continuous Process Improvement and Leading Change Within a System.
- Who is involved?
    There is a role for everyone. Gaston Together is actively recruiting citizen involvement from throughout the County. There are several ways to become involved with Gaston Together, including:

  • Action Team Member: Gaston Together needs volunteers to serve on the action teams. This requires a commitment to meet regularly and to actively examine specific issues. Currently, action teams are working on parental involvement in education and on juvenile crime.

  • Focus Group and Town Meeting Participant: As the action teams examine issues they will actively seek grassroots input through focus groups and town meetings. Citizen participation at this level is critical to the effectiveness of the action teams.

  • Leadership Team Member: Gaston Together also needs highly committed Leadership Team Members. These team members invest a great deal of time to complete training as a certified Gaston Together facilitator. They also plan and organize the day-to-day work of Gaston Together and provide services to other organizations regarding the Gaston Together process.
