Gaston 2012 Entrepreneurial Action Team
Announces Winners of the
“Student Contest For Business Ideas”

The Gaston 2012 Entrepreneurial Action Team, an initiative of Gaston Together, recently announced the winners of its 2008-2009 Student Contest For Business Ideas.  The winners were presented at the May 28th Gaston County Commissioners’ Meeting. Action Team Chair, Brad Rivers, made the presentation of the winning students.  The focus of this program is to provide in-depth opportunities for students to explore the mechanics of developing a new business idea.

The winners were:  First Place, the team of Charley Drum, Brook Cole and Drew Swift, Bessemer City High School (Bill Busshart teacher) for their business proposal, “ Dog Days Inn.” The team received a $1,500 scholarship for their proposal to create a kennel service with grooming and exercise facilities located in the west side of the county.  The Second Place and a scholarship of $1,000 went to Misty Haskin, North Gaston High School (Terri Cochrane teacher), for her proposal, “Happy Days Children’s Facility,” a proposal for a day care for the younger disabled child.  Abbie Gibson, Hunter Huss High School (Carmella Watson teacher), won third place and a $750 scholarship for her business proposal, “Mind Over Matter,” a psychological health center that will help people deal with problems from daily stress.   Fourth place and a $500 scholarship went to the team of Olivia Costner, Haley Knight and Savannah Lucas, Forestview High School (Kitty Lyon teacher), for their business plan, “Sensuous Breeze Beauty Salon,”  a full service salon featuring hair, nails, skin care, makeup and tanning.

The four winners were among a group of seven finalists who gave oral presentations on their business plans to the selection committee.  Sixty-seven business proposals from seven different high schools were submitted during the school year.  The requirements for the business plans included:  need for the product or service, description of the product or service, basic market analysis, marketing plan outline, and revenue model.

The selection committee was composed of some of the members of the Gaston 2012 Entrepreneurial Action Team and included:  Brad Rivers, Small Business Center, Gaston College; William Manning, retired US Postal Service; Diane Norris, Carolina Health Information Consulting, Inc.; Mitchell Johnson, BB&T; Stephanie Michael-Pickett, Marketing & Public Relations, Gaston College and Chris Caveny-Cox, NC Cooperative Extension.

Corporate sponsors of the student business competition were:  Gold Sponsor, Defense Technologies, Inc.; Silver Sponsor, Fab-Tec, Inc.; and Bronze Sponsor, Community One Bank.    The Action Team partnered with Gaston County Schools and Karen Gilbert, Director of Career and Technical Education, to develop this business competition which serves as a hands-on learning experience to promote the entrepreneurial spirit.
